What Curfew can't do.
Parental controls get sold with a lot of promises. Here is the list of things Curfew does not do, on purpose or because the iPhone does not allow it. We would rather you knew before you installed it.
It cannot lock the phone outright.
No app can. When Curfew says a phone is "locked", every app except the ones you marked always allowed is shielded. Calls always work, and so does anything you decided a kid should reach in an emergency. We think that is the right line.
It cannot read messages or see the screen.
Apple's Screen Time tools let an app decide which apps are open and for how long. They never show the app what is inside those apps. Curfew does not know what your kid typed, watched, or searched, and neither do we.
It does not track where your kid is.
Places you set up, like school, are checked on the kid's phone itself. Your phone only learns that the kid's phone is inside or outside a place you created. There is no map, no history and no live dot.
It is only as strong as your Apple Account password.
Curfew can block deleting itself, block new installs and lock account changes. A kid who knows the parent's Apple Account password can still approve their way out of Screen Time. Keep that password to yourself and turn on two-factor authentication.
It needs a child account in Family Sharing.
Apple only lets an app set limits on an iPhone signed in with a child account that belongs to a Family Sharing group. A teenager with their own regular Apple Account would need to be moved into one first, which Apple allows with a few steps.
It counts time in fifteen-minute steps.
Apple reports usage in thresholds, not a live clock, so allowances are enforced in steps. Rollover and earned minutes are rounded in the kid's favor by up to one step. Insights show the same approximate minutes.
The adult-website filter is Apple's.
Curfew switches on the same filter Screen Time uses and lets you add sites to always allow or always block. Coverage is Apple's, and it applies to Safari and browsers built on the system engine. An app with its own browser engine or a VPN can be outside it, which is why Curfew also lets you shield those apps.
It does not run on Android or on a Mac.
Curfew is built on iPhone-only tools. A kid's Android phone or a family laptop is not covered.
It will not nag your kid for us.
The kid's app shows what is happening and when it changes, and lets them ask for more time. It shows no ads, collects no analytics about the child, and never messages them on our behalf.
